As far as personal image in the world of business is concerned, another major adjustment that you might have to make is your attitude. Recently during a trip to the Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara, We took our time to observe some facinating animals and insects. Lake Nakuru is a national park well known for its avian life. The park is relatively small measuring some 188 sq kms and stands at an altitude of approximately 5,770 ft.

The dung beetle always leaves me in awe for the troubles it goes in breaking down animal dung and rolling it into small round balls. The male dung beetle will make a small dung ball and roll it as far as its nest is. The male rolls the dung with its hind lesgs as the females rides on top of the small dung ball. In the dung beetles world, just like in our world, there exists the lazy and bandits lying by the wayside waiting for easy loot. The male will from time to time encounter these dung bandits and what ensues...is a natural marvel. The dung beetle will abandon the dung and embark in a wrestling match with its oponent...with clinical expertise that would leave the wrestlings superstars green with envy...this fight will continue until he subdues the marauding male and continues with his "Gold" back to his nest. To the beetle, the dung is indeed like Gold. To the beetle, fresh dung is like rain pouring at the perched sahara.

While on a fulls day game drive january 2010 at the Mara national reserve, we traced group of hyenas "hoping" to hunt down some thompson gazelles. Thompson gazelles are agile animals that are hunted maily bay the fast animals or the sly cat- the leopard. This rendevouz was at open plains with the gazelles well aware of the ulterior intentions of the hyenas. The Hyena is known to be a savage hunter which will tear down its prey without killing it. Most of the animals will eithr die of shock or excessive bleeding.
With the hyenas intentions well noted, the gazelles were keen to mock them. well known for their laziness, the hyenas would walk behind slowly following the gazelles and lying down after every 5 or so meters. African folk has it that a hyena will follow a person closely.......watching closely yhe swinging arm.........with the hope that at some point soon enough, it should fall off....offering it an easy earned buffet.
While observing and discussing the Hyena amongst the clients on board.....the conclusion that reigned (on a lighter note)....was the hyenas were praying and hoping that either God strikes one gazelle dead ....or lightening would strike one dead for them.

The cruise line that you choose for your cruise travel will give you guidelines on what to pack for evening wear. Seven day cruises usually have two formal nights, a dark suit or tuxedo for the gentlemen, and a cocktail dress or gown for the ladies. All cruise ships have Tuxedo rentals but I recommend purchasing your own. You will get plenty of use out of it after you fall in love with cruising. (Ten-day cruises have three formal nights).

On some of our cruise vacations Scottish Gentlemen wore kilts and sporran and we have also seen ceremonial African Garb. Shorts, jeans and tee shirts are unacceptable in the dining room at dinner.

There are cruise lines that have no “formal” nights. Windjammer is shorts and T Shirts all day and all night. If you don’t want to go to the trouble of dressing up tell your travel agent so he/she can give you the options for ships that have alternative dining or ships that don’t have the formal nights.

Some of the Cruise Lines have theme nights, RCCL has country and western night, Costa has Toga Night, Princess throws a Caribbean Party etc. Your Agent should know if the cruise line you have selected has any of these special party nights so that you can be prepared if you wish to participate in the activities.

If you are going to a warm climate I recommend that you pack at least two bathing suits since you might swim in the morning (water aerobics anyone?) then go to the dining room for lunch, and decide afterwards to go back to the pool. There is nothing worse than putting on a cold, wet suit.

Don’t forget the suntan lotion and a hat plus a good quality pair of sunglasses. If you are planning to wear a dress that has no sleeves, remember this when tanning so that you don’t have unsightly tan lines that will completely ruin the look of your dress.

I bring several pairs of prescription glasses (both clear and sun) in case one gets lost. Even in Alaska the glare was pretty strong and you will get sunburned there too. Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen!

I pack a bathing suit and cover up in my carry on luggage. It may take a few hours for your luggage to be delivered to your room and this way you have a suit to wear on the deck right away, if you are on a ship that you have previously cruised.

Cruise Tip: It is smart to pack a light sweater for day time and a pretty shawl for the evening even on Caribbean Cruises since some of the ships are quite cold. Twice I have broken this rule and had to buy a sweatshirt on board.

If you haven’t cruised on the cruise line before, after dropping off your carry on luggage in your room, head for the buffet, then tour the ship to get your bearings. This is especially important on the huge mega-liners. Some cruise lines give a tour of the ship on the first day, if they do, take it. Check your daily sheet for the time. The sheet will be in your cabin when you arrive. Ask your cabin steward to leave two in the future so that both of you know what is going on and at what time. There should be a layout guide of the entire ship in your room. If not, go to the purser’s office (reception) and ask for one for you and whomever you’re traveling with.

The day you arrive at the ship, after you’ve gotten the layout, make any appointments you want; hair, nails, or massages, appointments sell out very quickly for formal nights and days at sea. If you are using the traditional dining option make sure it is correct, if it isn’t go see the Maitre d’. He will try very hard to accommodate you.

And by all means don’t miss the sail away party on deck as you are leaving port. Some ports make a big deal out of this. For instance in Fort Lauderdale the Condos at the end of the channel toot horns, blink lights, and ring bells to the departing ship. The ship then toots back three or four times. In Edinburgh they had a group of bagpipers serenade us out, and in Viet Nam they had a local group of young girls do traditional dances in traditional garb as we left port. Very cool, and great pictures for your photo album.

On the subject of packing, don’t over pack, every cruise review stresses this. I am very guilty of this particular problem, but I live across the channel from the port we frequently use. Keep in consideration that if you are flying there are definite weight restrictions. They will make you pay if your bags are too heavy.

Stuff things little items into your packed shoes to save on space. Don’t bring shoes for every outfit. One pair of sturdy shoes for touring, one pair of casual shoes and one pair of dressy shoes will get you through.

Buy travel size appliances i.e., curlers, irons and blow dryers (on most cruise lines today hair dryers are provided but they are not very powerful). Shampoo and Conditioner, body lotion, soap and shower caps are all provided. On Caribbean Cruise I pack a small spritz bottle, the kind you use to spray your plants, so when we are swimming in the salt water I can spray off the salt on my face and body when we get out. It tends to dry out my skin making me very uncomfortable. The beaches in Fort Lauderdale have showers but that is not always true for the rest of the world.

Tape a copy of your itinerary on the inside of your suitcase so if it gets lost the airline will know where to send it. Make sure your have toiletries, medications, bathing suit and cover up (if going to a warm climate) as well as a couple of pairs of clean underwear packed in your carry on in case your luggage is delayed.

Squirrel Catcher Sacrificing Individuality In Steven Crane’s Civil War Novel, The Red Badge Of Courage

When Steven Crane wrote The Red Badge of Courage in 1895, he had never even been in a battle, let alone the American Civil War. Nevertheless, it's now considered one of the most accurate portrayals of war in literature - a characteristic that initially ticked a lot of Americans off as being "unpatriotic." Only when British critics praised the novel could Americans forgive Crane's suggestion that war is no picnic in the park.

The novel centers on Henry Fleming, a.k.a. the Youth, who enters the war expecting poetry, grandeur, courage, and, above all, action - when the ladies welcome him home, that is. What he doesn't figure into his plans is the fact that war is tedious when nothing happens and terrifying anytime anything does. During only his second round of battle, the Youth rekindles his relationship with the will to live and runs for the hills.

While chucking a pine cone at a squirrel in the forest, the Youth has an epiphany: the squirrel doesn't stand there unflinching to meet an honorable death, so why should he? This revelation makes him feel pretty clever but, as with most squirrel-based life decisions, the sentiment only lasts a few minutes. The Youth then stumbles across a corpse that's practically riverdancing with ants and has another epiphany: the world really doesn't care who lives or dies. Horrifying though this may be, it's also kind of liberating, and he heads back to battle.

Only by A) realizing that his life isn't all that important in the grand scheme of things, and B) deciding to sacrifice his individuality to a larger concept (like the Union, the flag, camaraderie, or US History) is the Youth able to join and influence the battle. That's right: taking the "self" out of the picture really makes the whole "save yourself!" thing less of an issue. It's the same logic that makes you dive for the ball as a 300-lb guy named Buck carves a path through your teammates: you'd better either really want that ball or really like your team.

With that in mind, it's no wonder that all the main characters in The Red Badge of Courage have both real names like Henry, Jim, or Wilson and generic names like the Youth, the Tall Soldier, or the Loud Soldier. Actually, Stephen Crane was way ahead of his time when he decided to write a war novel that explored soldiers' personal struggles instead of the overall movement of Civil War battles or the causes of the Civil War; only by showing the individual experience could he portray the process of becoming a cog in "the war machine." Not bad for a 20-year old literary type who'd probably never even been in a fistfight.

Wildlife Zoo Demo Gettysburg, Pennsylvania And The Environs: The Battlefields, Hanover And Bear Country

Gettysburg,Pennsylvania was the site of one of the most famous battle of the Civil War.  The battle lasted for three day and the residual effects a lifetime.  This was the high water mark for the Confederate Army.  Back seat quaterbacking shows many mistakes by the Confederate Generals, which gave victory to the Union.  Spend at least three days visiting this historic site.  Re-enact the battle each day.  Be sure to take the ranger guided tours.  They are enlightening.

We drove the three miles to the National Park Visitor Center to find out schedules for ranger tours.  When we arrived, one was about to start in the National Cemetery across the street from the VC on Cemetery Hill.  This is the high ground, to which the Union forces retreated after being routed on July 1st.  Here are buried many of the Union dead from this three-day battle, and subsequent wars. Here also on November 19, 1863 Edward Everett gave a stirring two-hour speech dedicating the cemetery.  This was followed by a few remarks by President Lincoln, which lasted only a couple of minutes.

Today we started to take the auto tour of the battle.  We wanted to follow the three days.  We started at the North West of the town at McPherson Ridge.  Here Buford's cavalry unit dismounted and held the CSA advance into town for two hours until Union infantry arrived on the scene.  Many Union troops were slain in a railroad cut, which was under construction at that time.  It was like a funnel, which became a trap.

At two o'clock, a ranger was giving a talk on Little Round Top, the scene of the major fighting on July 2nd.  This engagement was best known from Chamberlain's saving of the left flank of the Union forces in the movie Gettsburg.  What is not known is that the CSA forces under Oates woke up at three A.M., and marched twenty-five miles before being engaged at 7:30. P.M. They had also climbed Big Roundtop, because they thought the flank was there.  This does not diminish the bravery of the 20th Maine, but puts things into perspective.

Before this was intense fighting at The Peach Orchard, the Wheatfield and Devil's Den with 34,000 CSA against 33,000 USA.  As night fell both sides had suffered terrible casualties.  The ranger was excellent and stayed to answer many questions.

Back to the battlefield today.  We drove along the Confederate lines on Seminary Ridge.  We were impressed by they number of casualties suffered by some of the regiments, while others had much less.  Those had been kept in reserve.

After a hearty lunch, we met with a ranger near the high water mark on Cemetery ridge, the Union lines, for a talk.  He informed us that the CSA made it to the ridge on the second day of battle, but retreated across the field when it became dark.  The casualties on the second day of the battle July 2 were the greatest of the three days of fighting.  He also said that the Emmittsburg Road, which stretched in front of us, was a sunken road.  I do not understand why the CSA did not merely retreat to that road, hunker down under cover, tear down the fences, bring up reinforcement under the cover of night and then continue the attack the next morning.  Instead of marching across a3/4 mile field, all they had to do was to charge a couple of hundred yards.  The outcome might have been different.

Standing on the ridge and looking across the fields is an awesome sight.  The ranger said that Pickett's Charge on the third day was typical of the battles.  None of the killing fields, which we have seen, were like this wide expanse.  Some were wide open with little undulation in the topography like Malvern Hill in the Seven Days Battles or Cheatham Hill at Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia.  Even Antietam, the bloodiest single day battle was fought on rolling terrain.  So were Manassas, first and second, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spotssylvania, and Petersburg.  Day three of Gettysburg was wide open.  The only place to hide was in the sunken road.  The fences were still there and the soldiers had to climb over them on both sides to continue the attack.  Of the 12,000 men who started across the field, only 200 made it over the wall on Cemetery ridge.

The aftermath was that the CSA retreat across the Potomac, leaving their wounded in the field.  Many laid injured where they dropped for three and four days, before the Union got around to taking care of them.  During that time a storm came in and it rained for two days making the fields a sea of mud with thousands of wounded and dying men and hundreds of horses.  These things are not written in our history books.

Near Gettysburg is a stable called Hanover Shoe Horse Farm.  This is not a little town operation, but houses over 1,800 standardbred horses.  These are the trotters and pacers of the racing world.  Some of their sires command $12,000 per performance, without guarantee.  Their dance cards are full, 157 mares awaiting them.  That is $1,884,000 per year.  Hey dude, that is some studmuffin.

Hanover is the next town, named after Hanover, Germany from which many of its residents came.  Its claim to fame during the Civil War is that the cavalry units of  Kirkpatrick and Custer kept J.E.B. Stuart's unit out of the battle occurring twenty-five miles away.

Our final stop was Boyd's Bear Country, just south of our campground on Business 15.  Located in a huge barn, four floors of bears in all sizes and dress seek homes from children old and young.  If you feel so inclined you cam fill your own bear with colored beads representing different traits desirable in a loving companion.  Other areas have clothing, which any proper bear needs to wear for any occasion.  There is no charge for admission, but few are able to leave without taking home a new friend.


Ate a substantial breakfast at the Moose Lodge in downtown Gettysburg.  We then finally took the walking tour or the town itself.  We saw the train station Lincoln arrived at on Nov. 19, 1863 to participate in the dedication of the National Cemetery.  We visited the house in which he stayed overnight, which had been owned by Mr. Willis, who was responsible for establishing the cemetery. One of the houses really grabbed our attention.  In the attic was a small window, from which sharpshooters took shots at the soldiers, who were retreating.  They were also fired upon and the wall of the house still has over one hundred bullet holes in the brickwork.

Drove out to the East Battlefield, where J.E.B.Stuart was supposed to attack the rear of the Union army on Cemetery Ridge.  He spent all of July 3rd fending off attacks by Generals. Gregg and Custer.

South-West China is home to the greatest number of China's ethnic minorities, most of whom live in Yunnan. The province has 26 different ethnic groups and their culture and lifestyles are making for fascinating places to visit.

The major city and gateway from China to SE Asia is Kunming, often known as the "Spring City" because of its year-round mild climate. The city is also known for flowers and its famous 'Bird and Flower' market is well worth a visit. Kunming is also known for its many parks which are an ideal place to relax and watch the old men (and women) smoking their bamboo water pipes. But also visit the parks early in the morning to watch the local people practice their tai chi and other forms of exercise.

Near Kunming is the famous "First Wonder of the World", the Stone Forest (Shi Lin). This is a UNESCO listed site of astonishing stone pillars. Many of these pillars are said to resemble animals such as snakes, elephants, birds, and dragons, but most resemble trees, hence the name Stone Forest.

But Kunming is, for most people, a stopping off point on the way to SW China's other attractions. Among these are the ancient towns of Dali and Lijiang and the tropical area of Xishuangbanna.

Dali, home to the Bai people, sits on edge of Lake Erhai and is surrounded by mountains on the other three sides. The small city is overlooked by Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple. Here we can still find ancient buildings, city walls and the old city moat and watch the Bai people go about their daily business wearing their traditional dress. Nearby is the Butterfly Spring, known across China for its romantic connections. Hundreds of butterflies settle on the trees and this is where every young Bai man will propose to his sweetheart.

Lijiang, a World Heritage Site, is the home of the Naxi people, one of the world's few matriarchal societies. The 800 year old city has been restored after being badly damaged in an earthquake in 1996. The old part of the city is car free and you can wander the cobbled streets admiring the unique local architecture and crossing the many bridges over its ancient but still working water supply system.

In the far south of Yunnan is Xishuangbanna. Here you will find the Dai people and their rich culture. This area is noted for its biodiversity. Its tropical climate and remoteness led to an abundance of plant species which exist only here. The area is particularly known for rare orchids. It is also home to China's only wild Asian elephants. The capital of the area, Jinhong is an ideal base for exploring the many Dai villages.

In North West Yunnan, is the ethnically Tibetan town of Zhongdian which has been renamed Shangrila. Here you can explore the Tibetan culture in the old town or hire horses to explore the surrounding countryside. There is also a number of hot springs in the area. A key attraction is the restored Songzanlin Monastery on a hill to the north of the town. In the winter months it's even possible to do some skiing on the nearby Shika Mountain.

For RVers, it is a great area to camp, in view of the rock where you can see it change colors as the sun moves across the sky.



Ayer's Rock is located 250 miles southwest of Alice Springs and is part of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.



There are some pretty desolate spots on Australia's west coast, but Shark Bay is not one of them. It is a recognized World Heritage site, full of colorful natural beauty and endangered species. Shark Bay is an interesting place, too, because of the fossils that have been found there, dating from the beginning of life on Earth.



Shark Bay is full of great areas to see, including Hamelin Pool, where the water is so clear you can see all the way to the bottom. There are big sandy beaches, and you can see dolphins at a beach named Monkey Mia.



It may seem vast and empty, but actually the Outback is rich in sights to see. There are national parks and historic sights everywhere.



- Mungo National Park, located in The Willandra Lakes heritage area, has the "Wall of China." This one isn't man-made, but made by thousands of years of wind. It is made of clay and sand, and the formations caused by the wind and erosion are fantastic.



- Kinchega National Park is an area where there is water - sometimes! The Darling River winds through this area of red sand dunes and dry lakes. There is an abundance of uniquely Australian wildlife, including exotic birds like emus and others like kangaroos.



- Sturt National Park is an arid land in the Strzelecki desert, where you'll be surprised to find among the crags and dunes a wetlands area and forest. There are also white sands and red dunes for hiking.



In every part of Australia there are national parks worth seeing, and since motor homes are the most popular way to travel, you'll find plenty of places to stay. The state of New South Wales alone has more diversity than almost anywhere else, with land features like deserts, swamps, coasts, forests and grasslands.
